Biometric passport
If you do not live in Germany anymore but in Ghana, Sierra Leone or Liberia, the German Embassy in Accra is your competent passport authority. If you have recently moved to Ghana you should make a change of address in the passport at the Embassy by presenting the deregistration certificate from Germany.
Please note that for each application the personal appearance of the applicant is required.
Required documents are:
- Completed application (application form available at the Embassy or HERE www.accra.diplo.de)
- birth certificate
- 2 biometric photographs
- deregistration certificate from Germany (if Ghana is not listed as residence in the last passport)
- former passport, if lost or stolen: Police report
- If necessary. additional documents (decided upon application)
Fees:
80,- € (including € 21 overseas surcharge) for applicants over 24 years (10 years validity).
58.50 €(including € 21, - overseas surcharge) for applicants under 24 years (6 years validity).
If the German Embassy Accra is not the territorial competent passport authority, because you are still registered in Germany, there is an additional surcharge. (59, - € for applicants over 24 years, € 37.50 for applicants under 24 years)
The fees are payable ic Ghana Cedis at application in accordance with the current exchange rate.
When applying your fingerprints are recorded electronically.
Since the biometric passports are manufactured in Germany, the processing time takes 4-6 weeks.
Childrens passport/ Passport for Minors
Children can obtain a „Kinderreisepass“ (childrens passport) or an „Europapass“ (regular biometric
passport). The „Kinderreisepass“ is only valid until the age of 12.
All applicants have to appear personally, even babies. The applicant must be accompanied by
both parents. If one parent cannot come personally, a certified statement of consent of the absent
parents is necessary (see below).
Children over the age of 6, who apply for an „Europapass“ have to give their fingerprints at the
time of application.
PLEASE NOTE: If this is the first German passport for your child, it is very likely that other legal proceedings have to be finished before the child can get a German passport. If the parents were not married when the child was born, a paternity acknowledgement is necessary. If the child was born in Ghana, a name declaration is necessary.
The following documents must be presented to apply for a passport for an applicant under
the age of 18:
- Completed application form (available at the embassy or here: Link)
- Two identical, biometrically-compatible, recent passport photos
- birth certificate
- if this is not the first passport: current German and/or Ghanaian passport
- passports of parents or certified copy of the passport of parent (page with date and photo)
- if applicable: - parents marriage certificate OR
- paternity acknowledgement and declaration of mothers consent
- name certification (certificate you receive after giving a name declaration) NOTE: if the child was born in Ghana, a name declaration by both parents is necessary before a passport application is possible!)
- other documents such as adoption order, custody order etc.
- copy of parents and/or childs German naturalization document, if applicable
- if one parent cannot appear personally: Statement of consent from the absent parent,
signature certified by a German authority or a Notary Public
Passport fee: 26 € for „Kinderreisepass“; 58,50 € for „Europareisepass“ for applicants
below the age of 24, payable in Cedis at time of application
If we have doubts about the identity of a child, the embassy can ask for a DNA test.
Electronic ID-Card
Since April 1rst 2013, the Embassy in Accra can issue electronic ID-Cards.
The same documents as listed above for a passport application need to be presented.
ID-Card Fee: 58,80 €, payabale in Cedis.
