Certifications of signature (i.a. declaration of approval, renunciation of inheritance)

Please note that you have to bring the document that is to be signed. The Consulate General cannot assist you in drafting the document you need to sign. To obtain the necessary document, please contact the German notary you are working with, the German court that is ordering you to sign something or a German law office.

Please only book one appointment for your signature certification. If you are unable to show up for your appointment, please cancel it as soon as possible, so that other people can book the appointment. Multiple appointment bookings for the same person and the same matter are not allowed and heavily impact our appointment capacities. If multiple people have to sign on the same document, one appointment slot is sufficient.

If you are unable to speak neither German nor English, please make sure to bring someone who can translate for you.

Si no hablas inglés, por favor trae un traductor.

You can find elaborate information about signature certifications (including an explanation on how it differs from a full notarization) on the joint website of the German Missions in the US here.

More information on a renouncement of inheritance can be found here.

If you have any questions that are not answered by our website, please use our contact form.

Please be advised that the German Consulate General is not allowed to certify signatures or perform identity verifications to open a bank account, for loan applications or similar cases.
