German Passports and ID Cards

Important information

On our website, you can find a helpful overview on what you have to prepare before you submit your application for a German passport or ID card. Please familiarize yourself with what you need to provide to ensure a smooth process for us and yourself.

Please check the information provided thoroughly before you make an appointment for the passport application. Please note that these appointments cannot be used for applying for or renewing a travel document for foreigners/refugees. Please contact the Consulate through our contact form or directly get in touch with your foreigner's authority at your place of residence in Germany.

Please make sure to schedule one appointment per applicant (e.g. children, spouses, etc.). It is not possible to submit applications for multiple people within one appointment slot. Thank you.

Please note that the German Consulate General in Houston might ask you to submit additional documents at a later point, if deemed necessary to examine your application.

If this is your first German passport and you are not sure whether you can be considered a German citizen, please contact us beforehand through our contact form in the category "citizenship". Applications in citizenship matters that are aimed at establishing or applying for German citizenship cannot be submitted during a passport appointment.

Make sure to have a proof of your name according to German law, issued by a German registry office ("Standesamt") if your last name has changed since the last passport application. It is not possible to submit a name declaration during your passport appointment, please book a separate appointment in the category "name declarations".

Passport applications, especially for children for whom the name is not yet clear, can usually not be processed without a confirmation of the correct last name according to German law.

Please only proceed with the appointment booking if you are sure that you do not need to submit a name declaration. You can find more information on name law here.

If you are unsure whether you may need to submit a name declaration, feel free to contact us.

If you don't submit the necessary documents on your appointment or within a given time frame, your application can also be rejected due to lack of cooperation. A full refund is usually not possible in this case.

Please note that biometric passport pictures cannot be made at the Consulate General during your appointment. Please make sure that you obtain biometric passport pictures before your appointment and take them with you for your application!

In case you have any questions, please contact the passport section through our contact form.
