Family matters and first-time passport application

PLEASE READ and NOTE:

Before booking an appointment, please read the information on family matters or passports on our website carefully.

Please note that in both cases, it is necessary to submit all the documents listed that apply to you and that these generally need to be original documents.

Please understand that we will reject incomplete applications and that a new appointment booking with another visit to the office will be required. Since we do not have access to the booking system, please contact us via email after booking the appointment and let me know what you intend to apply for during the appointment.

Registration status in Germany: If you are still registered in Germany or if your passport still shows a place of residence within Germany, please contact your responsible registry office in Germany before applying for your passport to clarify your registration status. If you are no longer registered, you have to obtain a de-registration confirmation; in case you are still registered, we will require a current registration confirmation. For all applications that are processed by a German registry office, it is necessary to state your last place of residence in Germany (it is recommended to submit a confirmation of your de-registration).

If you were not born in Germany and obtained your German citizenship through descent, you generally need to prove how your German citizenship was obtained (e.g., citizenship certificate, naturalization certificate or marriage certificate & birth certificate & German passport of the German parent).

Passport photos can generally be taken in the office during the appointment. For passport photos for toddlers and babies, however, it has proven useful if you send us photos taken at home (please send them by the day before the appointment). It is best to place babies on a white cloth on a flat surface. Position young children in front of a well-lit light wall. Please make sure that the eyes are open, the mouth closed, and the face is well lit and directed towards the camera. The background must not have any folds or any motifs. The child's head should be in the centre of the picture and not fill out the photo (no close-up photos please). It is important that the image is in focus. Please send a selection before the appointment.

To apply for recognition of a foreign divorce in Germany you only need to book an appointment and visit us in person if one spouse has the habitual residence in Germany or when a new marriage is to be concluded in Germany. In these cases, please enquire directly at the local town hall/citizen’s office about which documents must be submitted to us and in which form before booking an appointment. In all other cases the "Berlin Senate Department for Justice" is the relevant authority. Please find more information following the link to family matters mentioned above under the category recognition of divorce in Germany.

Payments can be made by cash, or alternatively, via money transfer (OSKO) if you have downloaded your bank's smartphone app (please check whether your bank offers this service). Please note that we do not accept card payments.

If the booking is successful, you will receive a confirmation by email. This email also contains a link with which you can cancel the appointment and release it for another booking. Please make use of it if you are unable to keep your appointment.
