Visas (long- and short-term)
Welcome to the online appointment system of the German Embassy Addis Ababa.
The German Embassy Addis Ababa is the competent immigration authority for short term (Schengen visas) and long term visas (national visas) of all applicants habitually residing in Ethiopia and in Sudan. The German Embassy Addis Ababa is also the competent immigration authority for long term visas (national visas) of all applicants habitually residing in Djibouti.The French Embassy in Djibouti is responsible for issuing Schengen visas to persons residing in Djibouti: Boulevard du Maréchal Lyautey, P.B. 75, Tel.: +253 352503, Fax No.: +253 350007, www.ambafrance-dj.org
If the Embassy is not the competent mission abroad, applications are not being accepted. Applicants from Eritrea, Somalia / Somaliland have to apply with the German Embassy in Nairobi.
To file an application for a Schengen or a national visa, you need to book an appointment in the correct category.
The appointment system enables the Embassy to open to the public in an orderly and organized manner. By booking a fixed appointment matching your individual schedule, you can reduce waiting time at the day of the application.
Before booking an appointment, please check the information on the Embassy's homepage regarding visa procedures. On the hompeage you will also find informtion regarding the required documents and application forms.
Please note that incomplete applications cannot be accepted. Incomplete applications will be rejected and you will have to book a new appointment.
Booking more than one appointment for one individual is not permitted. Only after the appointment date or the cancellation of your appointment, you can make another booking. Please only book an appointment if you are sure that you can attend it. If you cannot make it for your appointment, please cancel the booking by following the cancellation link in your appointment confirmation. This will help the Embassy to allocate appointments to other applicants.
Please note that appointments can be fully booked weeks ahead due to the high demand and highly frequented travel periods. It is therefore recommended to book appointments early enough. Applications for Schengen visas can be filed already 6 months before the actual travel date.
Processing time for Schengen visas is 45 days. For airport transit visas it is 2-3 working days. Processing time for student visas takes several weeks and for family reunion visas at least 6 months.
Booking an appointment can be done fast and conveniently by yourself. This service is offered free of any charge. If desired, an appointment can also be booked by a trusted third party (e.g. the person inviting you or your business partner in Germany etc.).
On the following page you have to choose the correct appointment category from the ones listed below:
Category 1:
Schengen visas (for stays up to 90 days in a period of 180 days); e.g. for:
- touristic visits
- visits of relatives, friends, etc.
- business trips
- trainings and seminars
- sports competitions
- medical treatments
- cultural and artistiv events
- student and school exchanges
- conferences and fairs
- transit visas

Category 2:
National visas (stays exceeding 90 days) - waiting list for visa applications for reunification with a refugee who is recognized in the Federal Republic of Germany (not for reunifications with persons being awarded subsidiary protection status)
- applicants are not Ethiopian nationals but are habitually residing in Ethiopia or Sudan (e.g. proven by refugee registration with RRS/UNHCR, rental agreement, utility bills, school reports, other Ethiopian identity documents, etc.)
- reference person in Germany is holding a temporary residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) or permanent settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) as recognized refugee / asylum seeker / resettlement refugee according to § 22 Residence Act / individual being granted residence by the supreme Land authorities according to § 23 AufenthG (Landesaufnahmeprogramm)
- IOM / FAP is alloting appointments according to the order of registrations on the waiting list; you will receive further information on the proceudre during the booking process for Category 2.
- Applicants for reunificaion with a family member being awarded subsidiary protection status in Germany must no register on this waiting list / in Category 2. Applicants for reunificaion with a family member being awarded subsidiary protection status in Germany must register on the waiting list for an appointment to apply for a visa for family reunion with a holder of subsidiary protection status in Germany
Category 3:
National visas (stays exceeding 90 days) - exclusively for family reunion visas and visas to re-enter Germany; e.g. for:
- applicants intending to join their spouse in Germany
- parents intending to join their minor children in Germany
- minor children intending to join their parents in Germany
- fiancé visas / visas for getting married in Germany
- re-entry to Germany (lost or expired residence permit)
Please note:
- Appointment booking only by persons with habitual residence in Ethiopia, Djibouti or Sudan.
- NOT FOR THIRD-COUNTRY NATIONALS (E.G. THOSE REGISTERED AS REFUGEES IN ETHIOPIA WITH RRS/UNHCR) AND WHO INTEND TO JOIN A FAMILY MEMBER UNDER PROTECTION STATUS IN GERMANY (REFUGEE OR SUBSIDIARY PROTECTION) - PLEASE SEE CATEGORY 2
Category 4:
National visas (stays exceeding 90 days) - for other purposes than family reunion; e.g. for:
- work permit; also with advance approval according to § 81a AufenthG
- opportunity card (Chancenkarte)
- students
- scholarship holders
- PhD
- Au-pair
- voluntary social year
- opportunity card
Category 5:
Exclusive appointments for holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the African Union, the United Nations and Embassies for all purposes and durations (not for holders of German diplomatic or service passports)
Appointments to apply for a visa for holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the African Union, the United Nations and Embassies regardless of the purpose and the duration of the trip; e.g.:
- accreditation in Germany
- state and delegation visits
- employment
- official trips
- private trips

Submission of missing documents
If you were asked by the Embassy to submit missing documents, you can do that without prior appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. Please note that access to the Embassy will only be granted upon presentation of proof of the Embassy's request or your pending application. Inquiries regarding the status of visa applications will not be answered.
Once you have started booking process, please select the required visa category. Please remember that you cannot use your appointment for a different visa category. If you book an appointment for another visa category than actually requested, your appointment will be forfeit. Please note that you can see vacant appointment dates in the calender view, where you can select and book the preferred appointment (either the earliest one or at a later time/date of your own choice). You have to choose a date and a timeframe (e.g. from 09:00 to 09:30 am). It is not possible to get earlier appointments than shown online. Appointments can be booked up to four (4) weeks before the intended travel date. Please cancel your visa appointment as soon as you know that you are not going to use it. No-shows will be monitored and if necessary registered.
Please appear at the Mission on time at the beginning of your timeframe (e.g. latest at 9:00 am for a timeframe from 9:00 to 09:30 am). Otherwise entry cannot be granted in order to avoid longer waiting times for the other customers.
All the required information for the booking process must be entered according to your passport and in latin letters. You have to enter a valid email address. You will receive a booking confirmation by email.
