Visa application

The German Embassy Addis Abeba is the competent visa authority for short term (Schengen visas) and long term visas (national visas) of all applicants residing in Äthiopia and Djibouti. In case of incompetence the application is not accepted. Applicants from Somalia have to apply at the German Embassy in Nairobi.

National Visa for taking up permanent residence in Germany.

National Visas are required for:

  • Family Reunion
  • Marriage
  • Studies - Language Courses (longer than 90 days)
  • Work
  • Voluntary Social Year
  • Au Pair

Category 2:

If applicant and person of reference at the Federal Republic of Germany are refugees.

Category 3:

All people with habitual residence at the Federal Democratic Republik of Ethiopia and Djibuti. Also, if the person of reference at the Federal Republic of Germany or the applicant is a refugee.


Category 4:

Holder of Diplomatic and Service Passports who are staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs / African Union / United Nations / Embassies

Special appointments

Very urgent appointments, e.g. because of humanitarian resons or german public interest, can be applied for with justification by the following e-mailadress visa@addi.auswaertiges-amt.de.

 

Visa appointment for persons with subsidiary protection status

With effect from 1 August 2018, close relatives (spouses, single minors, and parents of minors) of persons with subsidiary protection status residing in Germany can apply for visa for family reunion. These family members may already register for an appointment on this Website:

Due to the high demand for family reunion to a family member who is recognized as refugee or is an asylum seeker in Germany, 12 months may elapse between the date of registration and
the notification by IOM.

Consular Affairs and german passports

The German Embassy Addis Abeba is the competent passport authority all Germans residing in Äthiopia and Djibouti. For Germans who are residing in Somalia/Somaliland the Germany Embassy Nairobi is the competent passport authority. The usual place of residence must be proved. In case of incompetence the application is not accepted.

Consular matters for german citizen and legalisation of the signature, for opening a blocked account for students. Visa applications will not be accepted, enquiries about the state of visa applications will not be answered.
