Passports and German ID-Cards

Passport through the German Consulate General in Chicago

If you want to apply for a passport or German ID-Card at the German Consulate General in Chicago you are required to book an appointment through this system. Appointments can be scheduled a maximum of 14 weeks in advance; new dates are added daily.

Please note that if you need or desire a birth registration or name declaration (birth name for your child, name change after marriage, back to maiden name after divorce), an additional appointment must be booked in the category "Certification of signature and photocopies incl. name declarations and birth registrations".

For payments up to an amount of EUR 1.000,-, the consulate accepts credit cards issued by Visa and MasterCard. Please note that all payments will be processed in Euro.

Passport through an Honorary Consul

In the area covered by the German Consulate General in Chicago our Honorary Consuls in Cincinnati/OH, Kansas City/KS, Minneapolis/MN and St. Louis/MO are also authorized to accept passport applications. IMPORTANT: Due to the ongoing corona virus outbreak and the associated travel restrictions to Germany the Consulate General can currently only offer very limited regular appointments for visa. Please refrain from requesting additional appoinments. Please refer to for further information about current travel restrictions to Germany and their timeframe. Please note that a visa is not a guarantee that you will be allowed to enter Germany as this is at the discretion of the German border police.

If you are a US citizen and intend to move to Germany for studying or family reunion, please be aware that you are still allowed to enter Germany visa-free to apply for your residence permit on site. A visa process is not necessary.

Please be aware that appointments at the visa section are usually well booked in advance. Special appointments can usually not be granted, so please refrain from request for additional appointments. 

If you are not able to attend your appointment, please cancel it to allow other customers to submit their application. Once you cancelled your appointment, you will be able to book a new one.

Please be prepared to provide on demand documentation about your travel purpose via e-Mail after your booking (following working day) to the Consulate General. Lack of providing documentation may result in cancelation of your appointment.

Please note, that for a full notarization (in German "Beurkundung" e.g. applications for a certificate of inheritance or acknowledgement of paternity) an appointment has to be booked separately from this booking system.
