Visa Application
Would you like to apply for a visa? You have three options:
1. Online Visa Application via the Consular Services Portal:
Certain national visas (stay over 90 days) can be applied for directly online via the Consular Services Portal.
Available visa categories:
- Employment – e.g. Blue Card EU, skilled workers with academic or vocational training
- Study – incl. preparatory language course, application for admission, with or without admission letter (this does not apply to applications submitted through the APS procedure)
- Vocational training & continuing education
- Family Reunification
- Opportunity Card

2. Visa Application through VFS Global
Please submit visa applications for the following categories through our service partner VFS Global.
Available visa categories:
- ICT-Card, exchange of staff
- Accompanying family members applying at the same time (= appointment on the same day) should submit their application directly through VFS Global rather than via the Consular Services Portal.
- Researchers/full-time doctoral studies
- Accompanying family members applying at the same time (= appointment on the same day) should submit their application directly through VFS Global rather than via the Consular Services Portal.
- Contracts for work and materials (Werklieferungsvertrag)
- School attendance (including preparatory language course under 90 days)
3. Regular booking at the German Consulat General
National visa (stay over 90 days):
If you are unable to submit your application online via the Consular Services Portal, please book an appointment here on this page. Then click “Continue” below to proceed with your appointment booking.
Before booking an appointment:
Please read the information on the visa procedure on the website of the German missions in China.
On the following pages, you may schedule an appointment to apply for a passport or a national ID, for family matters as well as for certifications of signatures.
Applicable fees can be paid in cash in RMB at the current exchange rate of the Consulate General or by Visa- or MasterCard- credit card in Euro. Other credit cards, WeChat-Pay, AliPay or cash in Euro cannot be accepted. An appointment is not required for the following services:
- German certificate of good conduct (Führungszeugnis)
- picking up German passport documents and certificates that are ready to be collected - please read our information carefully
- change of residence in German passport documents
- proof that the applicant is still alive for German pension (Lebensbescheinigung)
- certified copies
Local jurisdiction
The German Consulate General in Shanghai serves applicants with habitual residence in Shanghai, Anhui, Zhejiang or Jiangsu. If your habitual residence lies outside the a.m. consular district, please contact the relevant German mission in Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu or Shenyang.
Please note:
If the appointment you have scheduled cannot be kept for reasons beyond the control of the Consulate General (e.g., short-term closure of the Consulate General due to extreme weather warnings or similar), you will be offered a special appointment at short notice. Opening hours and short-term announcements are being posted on the website of the Consulate General in Shanghai.
