You will need an appointment if you reside in California and you wish to submit a new application for 

Renaturalization pursuing Art. 116 II Basic Law or Section 15 Citizenship Law.

Residing in another state than California you may send in your application by postal mail with certified copies certified by public notary. 

IMPORTANT: whenever a family member already applied in the past for renaturalization please contact the Consulate General by email (staatsangehoerigkeit@sanf.diplo.de). In this case a personal appointment is not necessary and there is no need to wait. You will send in your application and the documents by postal mail to this Consulate General.

Even when you are the first family member to apply you are asked to get in touch with this Consulate General on the indicated emailadress to be advised in regard of the documentation necessary to be as complete as possible on an appointment scheduled.

Appointments are offered individually on previous request by email, booked in by this Consulate General and cannot be booked by yourself in this booking system. 

On the same appointment applications of several members of one family may be submitted by one applicant. Seen a long processing time at the competent German authority Bundesverwaltungsamt (aprox. 2 years) this is even advisable.

In case you would need certified copies for an application that will be handed in at another place, please get in contact by email (staatsangehoerigkeit@sanf.diplo.de) for an appointment on short notice.

If you want to collect a certificate of naturalization (Art. 116 II Basic Law and Section 15 Citizenship Law) please make an appointment in the proper category "picking up certificates".

• confirmation of German citizenship (certificate of citizenship)
• renunciation of German citizenship

For applications for permissions to retain German citizenship when getting naturalized in the USA, please make an appointment in the category "retaining German citizenship".

Please note that appointments in this category cannot be used to submit applications for German passports or registering the birth of a child born abroad.
